The project "Velzeke Bread" saw it's light on basis of a task given to me at the academy of arts in Zottegem.
In the beginning of the year 2007 we watched the movie "Les
glaneurs et la glaneuse" made by Agnes
Varda.
The movie is about people in France who are collecting or "picking up". For example, if the harvest of potatoes is done, in France you have
the right to pick up the remaining potatoes on the field and use them for your own consumption. Other people are picking up vegetables that are
left over after the market is done and yet others are looking for food in waste containers.
These people are called "glaneurs et glaneuses" in French.
In a way, these people are earning their daily bread, litteraly by picking up or collecting food or other needs to survive. It was the reflection
on these people and their way of living, that brought me on the idea of baking bread.
In my breads, you will find all sorts of picked up or collected materials, such as nuts, chestnuts, computer parts, old clothes or pieces of old crayons.
In some cases, I payed a vist to people at their home to bake my bread there. It could be due to a special occasion; like in the case of "the moving-bread" or
"the belgian bread". I filmed some of these happenings and I brought the oven myself.
"The Belgian Bread" was baked on the 19th of january 2008 in Willebroek, close to Antwerp. At that time there were a lot of discussions about |

| On the 8th of june 2008, my friend Tinne moved to her new flat. I baked my bread in her old house, while she was packing her things, getting ready to move. In the bread you will find all sorts of stuff, that Tinne picked up from behind the cabinets and from under the furniture. Things like broken cups, keys, a badminton ball. | ||
